Surplus food donation: Effectiveness, carbon footprint, and rebound effect

چکیده
Surplus food redistribution can be a way to relieve co-existing insecurity and waste. The waste hierarchy ranks surplus donations for human consumption as the next best strategy, when cannot prevented. However, effectiveness of donation in terms amount consumed, or management measure have rarely been assessed. few studies conducted date report substantial environmental savings, but results may sensitive assumptions regarding substituted food. Rebound effects are also not included, likely offset savings from donation. Therefore, this study investigated effectiveness, carbon footprint, rebound effect system run by charity Sweden, compared with those anaerobic digestion. Multiple analytical methods were used, including material flow analysis, life cycle assessment, questionnaire, 24-hour dietary recall. In footprint products credited overall using expansion. addition, direct indirect associated re-spending substitution-related monetary included. revealed complex effective network aimed at salvaging much redistributed possible, 78% eaten, there was effect, offsetting 51% potential emissions Nonetheless, net result almost twice climate benefit digestion (-0.40 vs. -0.22 kg CO2e/FU), supporting hierarchy.

Food transportation issues and reducing carbon footprint
Transportation is the largest end-use contributor toward global warming in the United States and many other developed countries. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE 2009 ) calculates that CO 2 emissions from transportation surpassed two billion metric tons in 2007. Yet a survey by Golicic et al. ( 2010 ) fi nds that fewer than 10% of Fortune 500 companies have addressed the environmental impacts...
متن کاملMeasuring the Effects of Food Carbon Footprint Training on Consumers
The supply chains through which foods are produced, processed, and transported can have a significant impact on the environment in terms of the carbon dioxide (CO2) that is emitted during each of these phases; however, little research has incorporated information about environmental impact into supply chain scenarios. Moreover, many consumers are unaware of how their food choices may impact the...
متن کاملHydropower's Biogenic Carbon Footprint
Global warming is accelerating and the world urgently needs a shift to clean and renewable energy. Hydropower is currently the largest renewable source of electricity, but its contribution to climate change mitigation is not yet fully understood. Hydroelectric reservoirs are a source of biogenic greenhouse gases and in individual cases can reach the same emission rates as thermal power plants. ...
متن کاملMeasuring Caltech’s Carbon Footprint
The project deals with collecting data on greenhouse gas emissions on the Caltech campus. The emissions are categorized in 3 scopes. Scope 1 includes direct emissions, scope 2 indirect emissions from purchased water and electricity and scope 3 other indirect emissions. The data is used as an input in a Carbon footprint calculator, giving as an output a corresponding number of tons of carbon dio...
متن کاملCity Carbon Footprint Networks
Progressive cities worldwide have demonstrated political leadership by initiating meaningful strategies and actions to tackle climate change. However, the lack of knowledge concerning embodied greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of cities has hampered effective mitigation. We analyse trans-boundary GHG emission transfers between five Australian cities and their trading partners, with embodied emissi...
